The short stories seem to be the hardest kind for me to write. I find that without limits, my mind swirls off and tangents are wrought and soon enough, the idea that should have been told in 10 pages, is suddenly 20 or 25. The short story, especially the type to be submitted with strict word count guidelines, has been the most rewarding writing that I have completed so far. They force you to make the most of your words, cut the fat and display the grizzled bones of your story.
